With Census Day — April 1 — approaching fast, members of the Westmoreland County Complete Count Committee are working to reach residents. "There’s really two parts to it,” said Phil Koch, executive director of the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County. “One is to understand what resources they might need. The second piece is really to understand where in the community they see a hub of activity.”

A half-century of history is just the beginning for the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, according to speakers at a 50th anniversary open house held Oct. 25 at the facility. The open house provided guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with the facility itself and with representatives of the organizations that currently keep offices there, including The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County.

The family of Terry Ranieri, a beloved member of the Hempfield community, was honored before the Steelers game Sunday at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. His family has set up an endowment fund through the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County that will be used to create scholarships for members of the Hempfield Area band.

Officials from Westmoreland and Allegheny counties have already established complete count committees, which are working to raise funds to aid local businesses and educational institutions. So far, the Westmoreland committee has raised $50,000 to be used for community outreach in regards to the census, said Phil Koch, executive director of the Westmoreland Community Foundation. Koch said the original $25,000 grant came from an anonymous donor and was matched by the Pittsburgh Foundation.

More than five decades after the Civil Rights Act changed U.S. law, former skinhead Arno Michaelis says, racial hatred is translating into violence in America and around the globe. “White nationalist attacks have escalated all over the world, and the death toll is growing,” Michaelis said Thursday at Saint Vincent College as part of “Not Hate-Not Here,” an event sponsored by the Westmoreland Diversity Coalition.
